Overview of the week's course
Tim’s goal is to help artists develop a personal visual language so that each painting, “tells a story”. He encourages artists to see subject matter creatively, build strong abstract compositions and work effectively with value patterns and color.
You will learn watercolour techniques like painting wet-in-wet to create glowing blends, how to soften edges and use a dry brush to add texture. You will gain an understanding of the colour wheel, where the pigments you use fit on it and how to mix colours effectively. You will work step by step through the essential stages of watercolour painting, including identifying your focal point and having the freedom to simplify a scene.
My goal is not to “tell you what to do”, but rather to work alongside you as you find your own way, at your own speed, as you explore your creative gifts and learn practical skills. Day by day you will gain the confidence to develop your own visual style and paint “big and bold”!
Beginners and partners welcome.

Tim shares some thoughts on painting
ART IS A JOURNEY
Just as colors transition with the seasons, between hot summers and cool, grey, misty winters, my paintings reflect the “journeys” of my life.
Developing as an artist is a life-long journey.
The journey of mastering color, pigments, composition, materials and techniques. Times of growth are followed by seasons of frustration. Like having climbed half way up a mountain, when I look up I see how far I have to go…when I look down I realise how far I’ve come.
Each individual painting is a journey.
Each painting begins with an idea of the destination and how it will be reached; but through diversions, delays and discoveries along the way it often “arrives” somewhere completely different. No matter how carefully I plan a painting, it’s impossible to know where the journey will take me.

Meet Tim Houghton
Tim Houghton is a New Zealand-based artist known for his expressive and dynamic painting style. With a degree in Fine Art from Cardiff College of Art, he spent two decades in the San Francisco Bay Area, exhibiting his work in solo and group shows.
Tim is fascinated by the colour and vibrancy of the world’s cultures and peoples—and the challenge of capturing these visual experiences on paper or canvas. Travel, more than anything, drives his creative soul…he has travelled to over 60 countries, most recently to Eastern Europe and Morocco, Eastern Europe, India, Spain and the Pacific Islands.
Alongside his artistic journey, he has been deeply involved in social work, supporting refugees and marginalised communities. His faith plays a central role in his life and creative practice, reflecting a deep appreciation for beauty, movement and storytelling through art.
Tim says, “For as long as I can remember, a cluster of interests—art, world cultures, people, travel and faith—have resurfaced in various combination like a giant Rubik’s cube, to define the direction of my life and work.
Having lived for the last 25 years in New Zealand, Tim paints in watercolour and acrylics in his home studio.
