Overview of the week's course

The only rule for this course is to relax and enjoy yourself! That is what Fiji is all about. Each morning we will learn techniques including sketching (don’t tell me that you can’t draw – I will help you learn basic skills), photography (with your smart phone and apps), basic embroidery, eco-dying, monoprinting, and so much more! We will even learn about traditional Tapa cloth skills. We will be scouring the waterfront to include found items, wandering through the local market,  scrounging through the beaches and resort gardens for leaves to include in our dyeing.

The afternoons and evenings you will have the options of either time to yourself or joining in on cultural excursions. It’s all up to you. Fiji is such a welcoming place that you will never want to leave. By the end of the course you will have wonderful memories that have been recorded in your holiday scroll so that you will never forget them, plus you will have the skills to do it again on your next adventure.

This course is suitable for all levels of skill – beginners and advanced.

Beginners and partners welcome.

Julie-Anne Rogers teaches Mixed media in Fiji

Meet Julie-Anne Rogers.

Julie-Anne is an exhibiting artist and has work in collections across the world. She has been a finalist in the prestigious Gosford Art Prize and has taught various art and craft disciplines for over 10yrs.

She incorporates many forms of art media in her work. Her favourites are hand stitching and sketching. She enjoys mixing media as this means that there are then no boundaries to creativity, and she can create a wide diversity of images and texture. She believes that life is stressful enough and that art should be fun, so no whips will be cracked!

Most of her textile and mixed media art is purely done by hand – no machine sewing. She has travelled widely throughout her life, taking many photos, and creating many sketches along the way. She often uses these as inspiration in her holiday scrolls and the practice helps her to relive wonderful memories. 2023 saw her take her third trip to Fiji, a country that she loves, and she has now decided that she would like to show others just how wonderful this country is, whilst relaxing, creating and learning with like-minded travellers.

I was fortunate enough to attend one of Julie-Annes workshops organised through The Makers Studio Cc. Julie-Anne is an excellent teacher – willing to share her knowledge and make all skill levels feel valued. I would certainly recommend Julie-Anne and hope to join more of her workshops in the future.

During this week, you’ll enjoy the rich culture and unspoilt nature of Fiji, the place where happiness comes naturally. We’re in Savusavu in Fiji’s North – known as the Hidden Paradise because it really is! We’ll take you out to snorkel on the beautiful coral reefs, to plunge into fresh waterfalls, to visit traditional Fijian villages where you’ll see a deeply hospitable corner of Fiji.
