Malcolm has been coming to Fiji regularly for the past 10 years. He loves the light, always changing from bright sun to fast moving clouds or even brooding storms. He delights in the locations along the shore and around the town. And he brings his enthusiasm, humour and teaching skills to the week to make it one you will value for years to come.

Course description

Malcolm firmly believes that drawing is fundamental to all painting skills like the skeletal frame is to the human body. “Painting is drawing with a brush,” he says, “and drawing is something we can all do.” Heard that before? Doesn’t apply to you? Much of it comes from learning to see things and portray them in your own way. Using simple but proven methods of capturing the image, seeing simple shapes, creating depth and appreciating light, Malcolm will build your confidence day by day.

By the end of the week you will have produced a sketch book of drawings and paintings that capture the essence of the world around us and that you will be extremely proud of. Through his firm belief in the inherent ability we all have, you will have nurtured and developed a skill that will bring immense pleasure to your travels. You’ll gain a lasting insight into the wonderful world of sketching and watercolour painting which you can build up from here onwards.

Malcolm has recently appeared in a short feature called Colour in Your Life.

All skill levels are welcome in these workshops, from beginners through to experienced painters.

Teacher: Malcolm Carver

Malcolm Carver is an architect and an artist, who has over the past 30 years traveled extensively in Europe, Australia, Asia and the Americas. Over the past ten years, he has augmented his travel with a variety of both international and local workshops with all the leading watercolourists in the world today.

He has devoted these experiences to creating extensive travel sketch books, providing valuable inspiration for workshops and studio work in watercolour.

He believes that we can all draw to a degree and we can learn to see, like other life skills. He seeks to reinforce the fundamental skill of seeing and sketching before painting by simplifying detail in drawing techniques and learning to see shapes.

Margarette Looney Fiji workshop
I had a fabulous week at the Malcolm Carver Workshop at Daku Resort Fiji. The workshop was a gift to myself as a complete break from work and family life allowing me to take the time to paint and learn. The tuition was of a very high standard and kept me well challenged. One of the best things about the learning was the amount of information I came away with which will flavour my art work from here on. Malcolm is a very good teacher and his demonstrations were quite something to behold – while he insists on following the rules when drawing and really seeing…he has a joyful abandon when it comes to the paint producing fantastic techniques and results. I also enjoyed the technical side of the lessons which used photography and IPad apps to assist our ability to see, draw and paint.
The social aspect was quite intimate as it is a small group we all got to know each other quite well and of course the staff at Daku make you feel like family anyway. We had lots of time to enjoy the island, food, and relaxation. It really is a great combination for an active holiday and I would give it five stars.
