Course description

During the course of the workshop Terri will discuss the power and variety of underpainting color choices, application of the pastel throughout the painting process, details in the final stages and knowing when to stop. Her intention in painting is to keep it vibrant & fresh, and avoid the pitfalls of overworking.

Terri will start by demonstrating monochromatic/value underpainting. After this each student will create a monochromatic underpainting. Terri will then proceed by demonstrating color layering and taking the painting to the next phase. Students will then proceed with their paintings receiving plenty of individual attention.

In the next stage, Terri will demonstrate multi color underpainting and students will follow her lead. Terri proceeds with her approach to further build up the painting…students will continue with their paintings.

The final demonstrations will be focused on finishing paintings. One of the main objectives for Terri is to portray light with pure pigment as opposed to “white light”. She will address how to make minor changes/corrections midway through a painting, and discuss and demonstrate what she calls “deconstruction”, which involves making more dramatic changes to a painting.
The last step is to emphasize the final marks/calligraphy that complete the painting.

Each of these demonstrations are techniques that Terri applies to painting both in the studio and en plein air.

Terri provides plenty of individual attention with students as they are painting. Come prepared to learn, work and have fun!
After nearly 30 years I am still fascinated by pastels. The tactile nature of pastel in hand, the surface with nothing in between continues to excite me. My primary interest is in capturing the landscape in all it’s beautiful and varying conditions. My work is driven by drama of light and a poetic resonance in a subject. I strive for a fresh, impressionistic feel. A single swash of light can easily inspire me.
