Course description

Immerse yourself in the unique culture and environment of Fiji, painting in watercolor and/or pastel. This is a workshop that encourages individual intuitiveness and experimentation, with the goal of translating what we see and feel into intriguing paintings. Paint with the idea of discovering what the magical mediums of watercolor and pastel can do while taking the time to develop a way of seeing. Students are asked to sit, look and observe before beginning work on a painting.

On the first day of the workshop, we will create a simple ‘one trip travel journal’ using native barkcloth for the covers with a versatile mixed media/watercolor paper inside. This book requires no sewing and can serve as a small sketchbook for your workshop experience. The remainder of the first morning will be spent painting on location with a short demonstration on technique.

There will be a three hour workshop every morning with free time in the afternoon to relax, go on excursions or continue sketching at your own pace.

Each morning, Sondra will begin by demonstrating painting techniques that relate to each medium. We will focus on simple, strong shapes and the play of light in the land and seascapes that can prompt different forms of awareness, feelings and thoughts. Our sketches and paintings will embody these responses, culminating in a fresh approach to our work as artists.

A passion for angels has led to the creation of her first book in photography, Angels, published by Blurb Books.

Sondra paints in watercolor, oil and pastel and creates collages in mixed media with emphasis on a sense of place. For her, the true joy of being an artist also lies in the sharing of her passion with others, helping them to discover their own artistic voice.

Aside from exploring the world and creating art, other passions include family, collecting vintage paintboxes and kayaking with her miniature Australian labradoodle, CoCo Bean.
