Course description

Portraits have a special place not just in art but in our history and our society. They record great figures; they create memories of friend and relatives; they give us a glimpse of the common man and woman in our neighborhood or across the continents. We are social beings and we prize the documentation of ourselves. Learning how to create portraits is a skill that you will treasure and apply for many years to come.
Working in pastels, David’s workshops provide you with an exhilarating, rewarding and above all accessible approach to painting portraits. A well recognized painter of considerable ability, he doesn’t like the word ‘talent’ as it suggests that painting has hidden keys that not everyone can unlock. He came late to painting himself, and vividly remembers NOT being able to do things. Figuring it all out has proved to be an important ingredient in his teaching skills as he clearly remembers exactly what he had to do to create portraits and can now unfold the process for his students.

“If I had to isolate one thing in particular, it would be planning,” he says. “You need to have planned what sort of portrait you want to create – detailed or impressionistic, colourful or somber, filling up the canvas or just taking up a small part of it. And yet at the same time a portrait evolves as you paint it; the whole adds up to something greater than its pieces. Finding that balance between planning and the emotional impulse that takes over is part of the joy of it all.”

David is an excellent listener and draws out of his students what they are after. He understands that everyone has their own approach and builds on that, ending up with results that invariably surprise and delight his students as they assess their own work. He works closely with every student at the end of the week, you will have had the opportunity to complete two portraits.

There will be a three hour workshop every morning with free time in the afternoon to relax, go on excursions or continue painting at your own pace.
