Pastels: a path to wondrous creativity with Marla Baggetta

Pastel is a wondrous medium that offers up the best of drawing and painting. It has the quick, accessible functionality of drawing, needing only the minimum of preparation, whilst at the same time yielding the rich layers and depth of colours of paint. The result is beautiful – not for nothing were they one of the favourite medium of Degas, Millet and Manet,, and frequently used by Monet, Chagall and Toulouse-Lautrec. It is a kind medium, allowing for easy blending of lines and tones – and easy correction which is a mercy to beginners.

Course description

During this week, Marla will be exploring the glorious and varied landscape of Fiji, where the sparkling ocean meets the lush tropical mountains. She will help you apply your own feeling for the place to your art, so that each student produces a unique interpretation of what is before them. There will also be visits to local villages and markets to enjoy the sights and smells, and to capture their essence in quick impressions that can be developed into full artworks later on back in the studio. Each day will start with formal instruction at Daku Resort, before the group goes out on location. There will then be an opportunity to rework each day’s efforts under her guidance later in the day.
I try to find the quiet spots with hidden beauties, a richly textured path, a trickling stream of light. Those are the subjects that deeply resonate with me and connect me to the landscape.
