Course description

Elena Parashko is returning to Fiji for her seventh retreat. Her teaching style is calm, relaxed and encouraging; after a week painting under her tuition, her students universally feel properly taught – there is never any feeling that they have been overlooked or forced to go too fast. She has a particular talent for understanding hesitations and area of discomfort – and then setting about solving the problem.

Elena knows and loves the views out over the bay from Daku Resort, the tide lapping at the beach under the raintree at the end of the peninsula, the constantly changing light on the mountains in the distance. It’s a subject matter of endless joy and she will show you how to make the most of it.

During this week you will learn how to paint the basic elements of any seascape and landscape in a realistic style. You will learn how to paint sky and clouds, beach scenes with sand, rocks and a foam wash, how to capture the movement of waves with ripple effects, reflections in water, adding people or boats to a scene as well as mountain landscapes with coconut trees and other vegetation. We will be using acrylic paint in Fiji but the techniques learned can also be successfully applied to oil paints when you return home.

Each workshop is structured around a group demonstration of a particular subject while on location followed by individual tuition. We will be covering aspects of art theory such as designing balanced compositions, blending techniques, aerial perspective and linear perspective, colour mixing, creating the illusion of texture, tone, as well as the use of light and shadow. As well as these actual painting techniques, we will also be learning how to paint “en plein air”. That means painting outdoors on location and dealing with the elements. All painting locations are a short drive from Daku Resort, with shade trees to paint under and the most picturesque views. In the event of rain, painting will be done from one of the villas at Daku Resort which has gorgeous views looking out onto Savusavu Bay.

All skill levels are welcome in these workshops, from beginners through to experienced painters.

Elena Parashko Painting Paradise Daku Resort 2017 g
I thoroughly enjoyed my workshop with Elena Parashko, and rate it as probably one of the best workshops I have ever done, and I have done many! Elena shared so much with us, including lots of techniques. I particularly enjoyed learning how to paint coconut palms and ripples on the water. Elena made sure that every student had lots of personal attention, and made us all feel comfortable and at ease painting outdoors. Thank you for being so patient and nurturing with us all. The whole week was full of memorable experiences, and flew by much too quickly.

Jill Evans. Perth, WA, Australia
Thank you for a most wonderful week in Fiji. I found your painting course extremely enjoyable, learning many new skills and remembering forgotten skills. Your tuition has given me the confidence to attempt painting on my own. What a beautiful and relaxing location to hold this course. My paintings have received many compliments from family and friends and I am very proud of what I achieved.
Julie Wilkins, Mudgee, NSW, Australia
The retreat was marvellous, it more than met my expectations as far as the tuition & location were concerned. I would recommend it to anyone, especially if they were relatively new to acrylic painting on canvas, as I was. Elena was very approachable, she remained calm at all times during tuition and she was friendly and polite even with all the questions being fired at her. The hosts & staff were all very friendly, approachable & lovely. Nothing was too much trouble when some guests asked for things or information.
