Mindfulness Movement Creativity: Course description

In our busy lives, with family, work and other commitments, we sometimes lose touch with who we are, what is really important to us and what nourishes us.  And we often look outside for acceptance, love and happiness which may sustain us for a while, but eventually that fades away.

During this retreat we will be with reconnecting with ourselves through a mixture of movement, meditation and creativity, accepting the totality of who we are.

Workshop outline

During this workshop we will be encouraging the practice of mindfulness through the enjoyment of movement, the practice of meditation, the creativity of art and the wonder of being in a glorious natural environment.

Our workshop activities cover:

  • Sitting, eating and walking meditations
  • Stretching and breathing to ground in the present moment
  • Flowing from stillness to gentle movement coming from within you, to allow a joyful creative dance that is uniquely your own
  • Allowing your movement to flow into creative form on to paper through a shared group experience and in your own individual space.
  • At times we may be in silence at other times talking and sharing.

No previous experience of mindfulness or creative arts is necessary.

Mindfulness Movement Creativity Kovido Maddick Daku Resort

Kovido Maddick has over 35 years’ experience in mindfulness and meditation and spent 10 years training as a Buddhist Monk in the Thai Forest tradition under Ajahn Sumedho.   He has been teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction programmes since 1996. He is co-facilitator of the Dunedin Men’s group, and is a Hakomi Graduate. Although his training is primarily Buddhist he is very eclectic drawing on the wisdom of many different traditions and contemporary teachers including Rumi, Osho, Ajahn Chah, Ram Dass, Jeff Foster, Thich Naht Hanh. Probably his greatest teachers have been his two foster children Mason and Savannah who can take him to love, joy and delight and rage, frustration and despair on a daily basis. For many, many years he tried to get enlightened, improve himself and get better at meditation and constantly failed. Gradually his focus has changed to more self-acceptance, trusting his own intuition and being with life as it is on this wonder-full and mysterious journey as a human being.

Suraya Langston is a registered arts therapist who has worked in the field of creative arts therapies for 25 years with adults, children and families in London and Dunedin. She loves to support others to enhance the creative energy within them to manifest their unique self-expression in the world.  Suraya draws her skills from the use of gentle movement, deep relaxation, visualisation and mindfulness meditation, expressive dance and the divine energy, and trusting our bodies to lead us into our own unique dance. She supports this energy to transmute into a creative flow with visual art materials to manifest images that affirm and support our dreams, wishes and life direction. Suraya has a Masters of Arts Therapy which focused on the power of sharing in a group to support us in our creative and healing journey to becoming who we truly are. She works in Dunedin in private practice running groups, workshops and individual sessions.

Monday

Late morning: Trip to Savusavu Town to see local market and shops. We put you in cabs to get into town and then leave you to wander around at your own pace, and let you take a cab (Aus$3), or walk back, when you’ve had enough.
1:00pm  Lunch at Daku Resort (unless you wish to stay on in town and eat there).
2.00 Tapa making demonstration – a local craftswoman will show you how tapa (the traditional bark cloth) is made and decorated.

Or, if you’re staying on an extra day, this is the day you’ll fly home from Savusavu back to Nadi and then take the international flight home. Let us know when you book so we can give you a discount for the extra night.

Travel

If you’re coming from New Zealand, Kovido suggests the following itinereray:

Travel from Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland on Saturday 1 July and stay overnight at the Fiji Gateway Hotel (formerly Raffles) in Nadi. The domestic flights to Savusavu is on the morning of Sunday July 2 (transfers from Savusavu airport to Daku Resort are included). Then Saturday 8 July from Savusavu to Nadi, and once again stay overnight at Fiji Gateway Hotel, returning to New Zealand on Sunday 9 July.

It is also possible to fly and return from Auckland to Savusavu in one day..

Cost approx NZ$1650 per person.
