Liz Bennett has been teaching yoga and working as a physiotherapist for over 15 years. She describes her development and expertise as follows:

Having my early physiotherapy career in the hospital system, then moving into private practice where I have remained, I’ve worked with people in a huge variety of settings, both in a hands on treatment capacity and teaching yoga to clients. Working in hospitals gave me invaluable insights into the management of acute and chronic conditions. Now, as a physiotherapist in private practice, I integrate detailed assessment and treatment with therapeutic exercise, applying the principles of individualised yoga. A personalised yoga practice encourages the body to heal optimally.

Creating a bridge between physiotherapy and yoga felt like a journey I was undertaking very much on my own 15 years ago. Yoga was quite alternative and I had to search for answers to the conflicts between contemporary physiotherapy, yoga and more accepted methods at the time like Pilates. The rise in popularity of yoga, the evolution of alternate physical therapies, neuroscience and of scientific research exploring the mind- body relationship has been so exciting to witness. I am absolutely inspired to be able to draw from and share these changes in the world I live in.

Yoga can be a marvellous therapeutic practice for improving strength and ease of movement whatever your body’s condition. If you are worried that you’re too stiff or have a dodgy hip or back – come on and join us! This retreat is particularly focused on achieving a balance of stability and mobility throughout the spine, the central support of the body. (And if you are as strong as an ox, then come along and develop a deeper awareness of your spine under her expert instruction.)

We’re offering mums and dads the chance to bring their kids aged under 12 for free – including special kids’ yoga classes.

Offer is for children under 12 ie 11 and under. Limit of two kids per adult. Accommodation is in ocean view bures which sleep 2 adults and a child OR one adult and two children. So:

*if you’re on your own with one or two children, we’ll charge you the single rate and put both kids in with you, and they will have all meals and excursions at no extra charge.

*if there are two adults both doing the course, you’ll be charged the twin share price each, and then there’s room for one child in a bed and one in a cot

*or if each adult takes a single room, we’ll put you in a double bure with adjoining bedrooms and you can spread the kids out between you however you choose

Teacher: Liz Bennett

Bringing together a well- tuned knowledge of the body through physiotherapy and hatha yoga, Liz teaches in a diverse and deeply insightful style that encourages you to explore your body and discover your strength and stability through breath and body awareness with movement. During this retreat you will develop skills in your nervous system to feel and integrate your body, breath and mind; to move with more ease, and to nurture your lightness and power as you walk through life.

Liz Bennett is an experienced physiotherapist and yoga therapist and has a thorough understanding of what constitutes a safe and suitable practice. After five days of twice daily practice, you will enjoy a confidence and fluidity that will benefit your entire body and – as a direct consequence – your mind. There’s nothing like feeling better and stronger in your body to give your life a whole new boost. Practicing yoga in Fiji is of particular advantage as your muscles relax and luxuriate in the comfort of the warm climate.

My yoga teaching began at 21, when I enthusiastically started classes at the hospital for staff on site. Formal training began in Sydney, in 2004, with a three-year intensive apprenticeship with physiotherapists and yoga teachers Simon Borg Olivier and Bianca Machliss of Yoga Synergy. After teaching full time at Yoga Synergy, I moved to the Northern Beaches and undertook a Diploma of Yoga Teaching with Michael De Manincor at the Yoga Institute of Australia. I began teaching Anatomy and Physiology to yoga teacher trainees in 2006. I provide bespoke Yoga Anatomy and Physiology modules at many Sydney yoga schools within their teacher training programs. I’m on the teaching faculty of the Enlightened Events Yoga Therapy training in Sydney and Brisbane, and deliver Leslie Kaminoff’ s Yoga Anatomy at the Yoga Institute of Australia. I run a yoga school, Yoga Essentia, at Warriewood Surf Life Saving Club, and teach students in all stages of life, from 7 to 77!

I meditate and do yoga to live life more fully, to experience compassion, and keep finding the energy for what I love. I regularly travel, mostly to India. I do aerial silk acrobatics and mountain bike for fun and connection.

Liz’s practice is based on hatha yoga in the tradition of Krishnamacharya, with influences from Feldenkrais, Clinical Pilates, Leslie Kaminoff, Gary Kraftsow, Donna Farhi, Simon Borg Olivier and Thomas Myers.

Daily Programme

The programme is structured around a morning practice with afternoons for activities and free time to enjoy a massage, snorkelling, or relaxing by the pool before returning to the Shala for restorative afternoon practice and a stunning Savusavu sunset.

Note: the order of workshops may vary depending upon weather conditions.The listed activities are part of the course and are covered by your fees. If you want to add on extra excursions, eg. diving, you are welcome to do so and they will be added to your bill.

Arrive in Savusavu. Transfer from the airport to Daku Resort 10 minutes away.

Morning: Trip to Savusavu Town to see local market and shops. We put you in cabs to get into town and then leave you to wander around at your own pace, and let you to take a cab (Aus$3) or walk back when you’ve had enough.

Morning: Visit to waterfall – we drive about 30 minutes round the bay to a beautiful waterfall where you can swimming a fresh water pool beneath the cascade. Bring along shoes that you can wear in the water and be ready to enjoy the exhilarating beauty of nature. We’ll get back to Daku in time for a late lunch.

11.30 Picnic lunch at Devodara beach. We’ll drive down the Hibiscus Highway for about 20km to the sandy beach at Devodara, where we’ll have a picnic and swim in the warm waters of the ocean and stroll along the beach fringed with palm trees. We’ll get back to Daku around 3.00.

10.30 Snorkel trip: we will go snorkeling at a nearby snorkeling spot and see some of Fiji’s magnificent marine life.

4.30 – 6.30 Village visit. Visit to a local village where you will see how Fijians live in extended family arrangements and will be entertained with a lively meke dance. And don’t worry – this is not tired old tourist stuff but a joyful embrace of their timeless culture!
