Botanical Art and Holiday Sketching With Leonie Norton 11 – 18 May 2014

2 courses for the price of 1

This course is confirmed to go ahead.

Whilst Botanical Art is all about detail,  Holiday Sketching encourages the student to relax and capture the landscape in a more impressionistic style. It’s a wonderful mixture of different approaches to art, and Leonie combines the two with inspiring ease. She dedicates the mornings to Botanical Art and the afternoons to sketching, taking you off around the island to capture the landscapes and details of your holiday. Have a look at the blogs for 2013 and 2011.
All skill levels are welcome. You are welcome to bring along non-painting partners or friends, who will find plenty to do and are welcomed on all the group outings.

Botanical Art

Heliconia painted by Alva

Heliconia painted by Alva

Leonie has been leading painting and sketching tours to Fiji since 2007 and has developed a keen eye for what will work best for each student.  There’s a rich variety of flora which offer a marvellous choice of subjects – multicoured ginger, delicate orchids, vibrant heliconia, sturdy coconuts and other exotic plants. They can be gathered from the gardens of Daku Resort where we are staying, and also sourced from the surrounding countryside.
During the morning workshops, Leonie combines individual tuition with group demonstrations. She focuses on each student’s particular abilities and style and shows them how to mould it to the demands of botanical art. She shows you how to explore various techniques in both drawing and painting and learn to mix and match any botanical colour.

Holiday Sketching

In the afternoons, she holds a demonstration of colour and techniques, and then takes you off to various local locations to sketch. Holiday sketching is quick and spontaneous; it’s a way of capturing an impression of people and place. In these sessions you’ll learn to create a visual souvenir of your holiday in Fiji, to diarise your experiences and finally to enhance them with colourful sketches. You’ll explore and experiment with various materials and techniques using coloured pencils, waterproof pens and watercolour. Leonie will support you with individual tuition on location and daily reviews of completed sketches.

You will receive a list of materials for both courses.

Costs: AUD $1850 twin share
Single supplement: $350
Non-painting partners: $950

Leonie Norton is a tough taskmaster with a wide smile. She won’t let you get away with ‘good enough’ if she believes there’s a better version in you. She’ll look at your work in detail, guiding you to a better understanding of how to execute your painting, perhaps chiding you now and then but inexorably raising your own skills and standards and making you delight in this exacting but hugely rewarding art form.
Leonie has also developed a skill in Holiday Sketching and regularly takes tours to various destinations. Perhaps it’s a release from the more rigorous demands of Botanical Art, but she and her students always find great pleasure in the relaxed afternoons by the beach or under the rain tree, sketching and laughing and learning and enjoying the landscape.

Leonie herself is a versatile artist who first made her name in Botanical Art. She is Sydney’s most prominent botanical art educator and highly qualified, holding a BA(VisArt), B.Fine Arts (Hons) Plant & Wildlife Illustration and a Grad Dip VET (Adult Ed). She illustrates for magazines, has many articles about her work published in art magazines, undertakes commission paintings, and has published a fascinating study of botanical artists ‘Women of Flowers’.
